General advice: Make your booking as soon as possible since the prices will go up steeply as we approach August. You can use the resources on the right to find the best deal. Money advice from ISM * In Moshi: Our advice is to bring your money with you in cash (preferably dollars) and on a debit card. You will be able to change cash in town and you can also withdraw money on a debit card from ATM machines at various banks (but NOT on a credit card). Very few places take credit cards except large hotels and changing travellers cheques can be difficult. Visa is the most popular system used by the banks but one bank in Moshi does take Mastercard. * At the Reunion: ISM will only be able to accept cash payments in US dollars and Tanzanian shillings and will not be able to process credit card payments for any outstanding items. If people pay for items in US dollars they will receive their change in Tanzanian shillings. We will run a small currency exchange service at ISM to enable people to change Euros, UK pounds and US dollars into Tanzanian shillings. People will be able to exchange no more than US$100 per day (cash permitting) and they will not be able to convert their Tanzanian shillings back into any currency. * NB - don't forget: Tanzanian entry visas (and Kenyan if you take the route over Nairobi). Yellow Fever vaccinations and prescribed anti-malarial drugs recommended. Mobile phones It will be cheapest to buy a sim card in Moshi (around 1000-2000 TZS ) and then use that for calls. Vodacom or Celtel are the main operators and there doesn't seem to be much difference in reliability. The duka at ISM will stock top up cards. Your phone needs to be unlocked for these sim cards to work. If you can't arrange that at home, you can get your phone unlocked in Moshi for about 10,000 TZS (depends on the phone). |
